5 Foods you MUST try in Holland

5 Foods you MUST try in Holland

Dutch food is so much more than just Stroopwaffles (yes they are amazing) , but I’m going to introduce you to my 5 must try foods from one of my favourite countries.

  1. Croquettes

These little fluffy potato rounds are much more than your standard Aunt Bessie’s that you’d get fed at school in the 90’s! In Holland they come with the option of more than just the bog standard potato, they come filled with Shrimp. Soft and hot with that crunchy crumbed outside, there’s much to be said for these little potato made treats. Oh and don’t be fooled if they’re on the starter menu they are NEVER small!

2. Dutch Apple Cake

With less pastry and more delicious Apple filling there’s no way to go wrong with a nice slice of Dutch Apple pie. Pieces of juicy cooked apple doused in cinnamon piled onto one other with a light crust base. This pie is traditionally served cold but there’s always a good hot mug of Chocomel (chocolate milk) near by for those chillier days, giving you the perfect combo for a mid day treat.

3. Hasgelslag

When you don’t know what to have for breakfast, why not have sprinkles on toast!?! Yup that’s right these long sugary strand resembling hundreds and thousands are made for breakfast.

Available in fruit flavour (not quite sure what fruit!) and chocolate, these tasty morsels are tipped onto your toast ones it’s been spread with apricot jam. You may look like you’re eating a breakfast for children but wow they’re good!

4. Stroopwaffles

Okay so they had to make an appearance! These thin waffles spread with a layer of caramel between them are meant to sit on top of your mug to warm up and become soft and gooey. You can buy them from all the supermarkets in Holland but if you find a local market keep your eyes peeled as this is where they’re twice the size and the caramels already warm! Perfect for those who aren’t coffee fiends or just want a deliciously sweet snack.

5. Proffertjes

Aka mini Dutch pancakes. These fluffy little pockets of delight can be amazing to watch be made but are even better to eat! If you want to stay traditional ask for powdered sugar and butter- yup a big old dollop of proper butter and melts nearly instantaneously. Other options like chocolate sauce are available but if you’re going to try them always go for the traditional way first. If you don’t like that, then you’ve got a perfect reason to go back for seconds!

So there with have it my 5 must try foods whilst you’re in Holland. Have you got any favourites that you’d recommend?
